Free Practical Information for Going Overseas to Thailand
Analyze the challenges and opportunities of the industry in Thailand
Successfully registering a company in Thailand is only the first step in going overseas. In actual operations, tax compliance in Thailand is often a major challenge for many Chinese-invested companies.
As the foundation of a company's finances, document management affects not only day-to-day operational efficiency but also, directly, the company's tax safety and compliance standing.
Because Thailand allows businesses to issue their own invoices, many finance staff newly arrived from China find it hard to adapt. Thailand has no unified tax-control invoicing system, invoice formats vary widely, and a simple document printed on A4 paper can be a fully compliant Thai tax document.
Tax Invoice
Applicable to: companies with annual turnover above THB 1.8 million that have registered for VAT
Essential elements: the words "Tax Invoice", the details and tax ID numbers of both buyer and seller, a detailed description of the goods or services, and the 7% VAT amount
Why it matters: it is one of the very few legal documents that allow a company to claim input VAT
Receipt
Applicable to: small businesses below the VAT registration threshold, or VAT-exempt industries
Key features: no "Tax Invoice" marking is required, but the basic transaction details must be included
Limitations: cannot be used to claim input VAT, but can support deductions for income tax purposes
Electronic Documents (e-Tax Invoice and e-Receipt)
Policy support: the Revenue Department has promoted electronic invoicing since 2018, and continued the "Easy E-Receipt" scheme in 2025
Benefits for businesses: lower paper document management costs and higher efficiency
Benefits for individuals: purchases backed by e-receipts can qualify for personal income tax deductions of up to THB 50,000

Complete information
Full details of both buyer and seller (name, address, tax ID number)
A detailed description of the goods or services (avoid vague, general terms)
A clear breakdown of amounts (amount before tax, VAT amount, total)
Correct timing
Tax invoices must be issued promptly after the transaction, and the 6-month period for claiming input VAT must not be exceeded
Revenue and expenses must be recognized in matching periods
Genuine transactions
Document contents match the actual business
There is a genuine transaction behind the document
Amounts reflect fair market prices

Many Chinese finance staff are used to the standardized invoices of China's tax-control system and are confused by the variety of self-issued invoices in Thailand.
In fact, not only Thailand but many Western countries use similar invoicing systems, so companies need to actively adapt to this difference.
The most common problem is using ordinary receipts to claim input VAT, resulting in incorrect tax filings.
Remember: only documents marked "Tax Invoice" that include the tax ID numbers of both buyer and seller can be used to claim input VAT.
Export sales not correctly marked "0% VAT" or not accompanied by export evidence
International transport service documents that mix up the domestic (taxable) and overseas (exempt) portions
A lack of documentation supporting transfer pricing
Small cash transactions without substitute supporting documents
Employee expense claims that do not meet Thai tax law requirements
Services provided by individuals who cannot issue compliant documents
