What does a tax health check cover, and how often should we do one?
2026-10-06

1. What it covers

TaxFocus
VATMatching output and input, rates applied, reverse charge on cross-border services, input VAT credits
Withholding taxCorrect rates on each payment type, treaty relief on cross-border payments, timely filing
Corporate income taxBook-tax adjustments, deductibility of expenses, loss carry-forward, incentives (including BOI)
Related parties and transfer pricingIdentifying related-party transactions, pricing policy and documentation, disclosure risk
OtherSpot checks of stamp duty, specific business tax, social security

2. Deliverables

  • A Tax Health Check report setting out findings by tax;

  • A risk list and exposure table ranked high, medium and low;

  • Remediation recommendations and priorities: what to fix first and how;

  • A management briefing.

3. How often

WhenWhy
Once a year, after the annual auditUse audited figures to check the year's filings and fix issues in the same year
Before M&A or fundraisingKnow your tax position so the deal is not discounted or subject to indemnities
After changing accounting providerFind problems left by the previous provider and draw a clear line of responsibility
When the Revenue Department sends queriesCheck yourself first, then respond
Before a BOI exemption period endsCheck use of the exemption and separation of BOI and non-BOI accounts

4. How it differs from an audit

An annual audit gives an assurance opinion on the financial statements; a tax health check is an advisory risk review focused on tax, based on the information the company provides, and is not an audit opinion. The two work well together.

5. Basis and scope of service

Basis: Thai Revenue Code provisions on VAT, withholding tax and corporate income tax; Sections 71 bis and 71 ter on related-party transactions. The whole review takes about 4–6 weeks depending on the completeness of records and the number of entities.
